What you are actually buying

We sell delivered work rather than hours. Development and migration are quoted as a fixed price against an agreed scope, so the estimating risk sits with us and your finance team gets a number to approve rather than a range to defend.

If scope genuinely changes mid-project we say so and re-quote the change. What we do not do is let a project drift and send you the bill for it. Ongoing support is handled separately, through a support agreement sized to how much you keep in-house.

The initial review of your application is free. We would rather tell you honestly that you do not need a project than sell you one, and we have told people exactly that.

The people are the same people

The team that delivers your project is the team that supports it afterwards. Powersoft is a small independent company that has consistently punched above its weight, and continuity is a large part of how.

We are in Horsham, and that matters more than you would think

A great deal of PowerBuilder work is now done by people several time zones away who you will never meet. That can work. It also means the person who understands your application is asleep when your month-end run fails, and a difficult conversation happens over email across a nine-hour gap.

Powersoft has been based in West Sussex since 1986. For a UK client that means the ordinary things: we are on your clock, we answer the phone during your working day, and when a project needs people in a room rather than on a call, we can be in the room. You deal with the same named engineers year after year, and you can come and meet them.

It also means a UK company, UK contracts and UK invoicing, which quietly removes a lot of procurement friction for public sector and regulated clients.

One of only two

Powersoft is one of only two Appeon-approved consulting partners in the UK. Because of our relationship with Appeon we are among the first to receive new releases, so we are working with a version before most people have heard it is out.

We have worked with PowerBuilder since version 4 and have supported every release since.

How an engagement runs

The same four steps whether it is a fortnight of analysis or a year-long modernisation.

1
Business review

Focused discovery with your stakeholders to capture the critical workflows, the compliance constraints and what success actually looks like.

2
Proposal and plan

A full project plan and a fixed-cost proposal setting out phases, milestones, acceptance criteria and contingency. You approve a number, not a range.

3
Deliver

Iterative, risk-aware delivery with controlled cutovers, continuous testing and a documented handover package at the end of it.

4
Ongoing support

SLA backed support, proactive maintenance and optional managed services once the project is done.

A sample of the work

Pensions and insurance — United Kingdom

Teachers Assurance, now part of LV=

A substantial PowerBuilder CRM and policy administration system built in 2002 and deployed with EAServer, previously maintained by another software house. We were brought in on a small fixed price, no fix no fee basis to resolve a migration problem left behind by the previous supplier. That led to the main project: migrating the source to PowerBuilder 12.5 and EAServer 6.3.1, with legacy Java rewritten in PowerBuilder because it would not run under the newer EAServer, plus Oracle 8 to Oracle 11 and a move off Windows 2000. Delivered on time and to plan, and they are still supported by Powersoft today.

Fintech — London

Inara Transfers

A PowerBuilder application running money transfer shops in London, which needed to reach the web and mobile devices securely. We migrated the application from SQL Anywhere to SQL Server for performance and a solid platform, then designed and built the front end in Microsoft .NET integrated in real time to the back office. The robust system design also helped evidence their PSD2 regulatory approval, and the integration let them absorb growth without extra staff.

Higher education — Ontario

Western University

Business knowledge extracted from a PowerBuilder application and the key business functions documented from the code. Delivered within quoted budget and on time.

Engineering — Denmark

COWI

A phased migration of the Caretaker application off PowerBuilder 7, plus bespoke software translating it dynamically into any language, and a full interface modernisation.

Banking — Kansas, USA

A bank with c.$79bn in assets

PowerBuilder 6 migrated to the current release with a SQL Server upgrade, redesigned application security and the bank's own staff trained. On schedule and on budget.

More of our history, our own products and our Sage development work is on the main Powersoft site.

Not sure which of these applies to you?

Tell us the PowerBuilder version you are on, the database behind it and what is worrying you. We will give you an honest read on your options, including whether the answer is to do nothing for now. The initial review of your application is free, and we are close enough to come and see you.
